CHALLENGES IN LEARNING MUTIPLICATION TABLES:

Most children learn tables by rote. Often children are able to get the right answer. But lack clarity in understanding basic multiplication facts. If you ask 3 X 0 =? Most children will say 3 instead of 0. They are not able to understand that 3 taken 0 times is 0 not 3. This is mainly because children are not able to make out the corelation between addition and multiplication. They often treat the two as separate concept.

WHY TABLE KIT?

In table kit, we extend the ‘skip counting’ concept to ‘repeated addition’ and subsequently multiplication. While constructing tables children place one set of sticks across another set of sticks and count the crossings. Gradually children underhand that 2 sticks taken 3 times is 5 as they make five crossings. Consequently, 2 x 3 = 5 becomes easy to understand. Soon they understand that 3 sticks taken 0 times is 0 as there are no crossing to count.
