3 D SHAPE: CHALLENGES IN LEARNING CONCEPTS OF 3D SHAPES:

Children can recognize and know about the attributes of 2D shapes by seeing. But when it comes to 3D solid shapes it’s not easy. Solid shapes not only have length and breadth but also depth. Now the depth is not visible. Child is supposed to visualize and understand. It’s difficult for the child at this age to visualize the depth of solid shapes. Consequently, children are not able to discern the attributes like edges, corner and vertices of the shapes.

WHY 3D SHAPE?

In order to have an in-depth understanding, children need to touch, feel and experience the shapes.  3D shapes provide exactly this. Children can hold the shapes and also see the depth of each shape. They can practically count the corner, edges and vertices and understand the unique attributes of each shape. This will help them to understand and retain the concept better. There is no need to visualise and understand the depth. They can experience it. With this kind of in-depth understanding children will be able to relate 3D shapes with 2D shapes better.
