CHALLENGES IN LEARNING CONCEPTS RELATED TO BASE 10 VBLOCKS:

Entire number system is made of only 10 symbols 0, 1, 2 to 9. Any number whether it’s more than 1 or less than 1 is made of these 10 symbols. Challenge is to learn how symbols are combined to make numbers.

PLACE VALUE CONCEPT – How are ones combined to form tens? How are tens combined to form hundreds? And so on …. Children keep getting confused in learning this combination. Sometimes they confuse between 13 and 31, 14 and 104 etc.

DECIMAL CONCEPT – One whole is made of 1000 cubes. This is divided into tenths, hundredths and thousandths parts. Children play with this part to understand relationship between decimals numbers like .2,.02, .002.

WHY BASE TEN BLOCKS?

Blocks are used for twin purpose. Same blocks are used to

  • represent ones, tens, hundreds and thousands while learning place value concepts.
  • represent one whole, tenths, hundredths and thousandths while learning decimal concept.

PLACE VALUE CONCEPT – Grouping units, rods, flats and cube help in understanding place value concept. While doing activities children learn how ones, tens, hundreds and thousands are combined to form numbers up to 4 digits.

DECIMAL CONCEPT – One whole is made of 1000 cubes. This is divided into tenths, hundredths and thousandths parts. Children play with this part to understand relationship between decimals numbers like .2,.02, .002.
