How to introduce the activity

Begin by naming the components and showing one complete example without turning the introduction into a test. Demonstrate one example, then allow time for independent exploration. If an answer is incorrect, use a prompt or comparison instead of immediately supplying the solution; this keeps the learner involved in the reasoning.

When the learner understands the first task, change the order, ask a new question or invite the learner to create an example. Repeat the activity in short sessions and vary the questions once the basic task is familiar. Asking the learner to describe, compare, predict or create a new example develops language alongside the main concept.

Guidance for adults

Use the stated age or stage as a guide and adapt the language and amount of help to the individual learner. Adult supervision should reflect the learner’s age and the components included in the product. Keep every piece together, follow the current listing or supplied instructions, and stop an activity if a component is unsuitable for the child’s stage.

Use the product as one part of a broader learning routine. A hands-on task can be followed by a drawing, a short written response, a real-life example or a conversation about what changed. This helps transfer understanding beyond the material itself.
